Nigerian man named Toyyib Adewale Adelodun has shared a date that would forever remain with him. He was an international student In Year 2011 at London. He worked several menial jobs after school to make end meet until it affected his mental health and he got arrested.

“Some dates carve themselves into your soul. April 29th, 2011, was mine.

Nothing could have prepared me.

As an international student trying to make ends meet. I worked different roles in London nightclubs after school, I could be washing cups behind bar, cleaning the floor, or

in the toilets (peke) where I give people perfume, chewing gum, etc to fresh up😊.

The toilet shift is the most coveted, because if you are nice and chatty, you could go home with good tips.

I guard my tips so hard because that is the extra I am using to support myself, as I study.

I left work happily after a very busy night as London was preparing for the royal wedding only for me to get arrested by the police.

Apparently, I was acting strangely at a cab office.

I had suffered a mental health crisis that would keep me in the hospital for the next 5 months (Section 3 Mental Health Act).

I didn’t even know where I was for most of the time.

Reading my medical report several years later left me in tears. I couldn’t stop asking, “Why me?”

When I got out of the hospital, life and people had moved on. The music on the top 10 has changed. My phone was not ringing again as before.🥺

As I was battling all of these emotions, I was informed I had some belongings at the hospital.

Low and behold, it was the heavily guarded tips I had in my pocket that night. The police left it at the hospital, packed in an envelope for me.

It is a Momento Mori moment.

What is it that you are holding so hard?

We are travellers passing through this world.

Never owners, only borrowers.

Hold gently. Nothing was ever truly yours to keep.

Keep it simple, pray, try your best.

And leave the rest to God.

You will die, and at some point, your haters will, too.

So what’s the big deal?”.
