Meet The First African Woman To Obtain A PhD In Computer Science From Cornell University,
Now An Assistant Professor At The University Of California

Meet – Prof Rediet Abebe, Ethiopian born Mathematician and Computer Scientist, in 2019 she became the first African woman to obtain a PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University.

She also holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, a Master of Arts (MA) in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics from Harvard University.

Professor Abebe is the Co-Founder of Black in AI, an organization which focuses on empowering people of color to pursue careers in artificial intelligence.

She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of California and a 2022 Andrew Carnegie Fellow.

She also co-founded Mechanism Design for Social Good (MD4SG), a research project and workshop series.

“My upbringing in Addis Ababa serves as the inspiration behind my work. While coming of age I witnessed first-hand how income inequity negatively impacts communities. I utilize technology as an avenue to close the opportunity gap for historically disenfranchised communities,” said Professor Rediet Abebe.
