30 years ago this summer, I graduated from medical school.
Celebrating the University of Ibadan College of Medicine class of 1992(UICOM92)!!! My lifelong friends, we did it 🙌🏾💃🏾💃🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Sharing 30 things from 30 yrs in….

  1. If I could do it all over, I would still go the doctor route. No regrets!
  2. For me, being a physician is a calling, a life long career and will never just be a job.
  3. We are incredibly privileged to have people share personal and intimate details with us.
  4. Empathy, humility and authenticity go a long way.
  5. Life can and does change in an instant.
  6. We learn more from our patients than they will ever learn from us.
  7. Doctor jokes are funny (those who know, know)
  8. Medicine teaches you life lessons on a daily basis.
  9. Thank God pagers/beepers are becoming extinct! At some point in the late 90s I was carrying three😳
  10. Gratitude is a balm for the soul.
  11. You learn the most about yourself through caring for the most challenging patients.
  12. It takes a Team to achieve the best outcomes in patient care.
  13. Making friends with the charge nurses will always be a win-win
  14. As physicians, we have to and need to take better care of ourselves.
  15. There will always be a differential diagnosis you didn’t consider.
  16. Nurses are heroes! You learn that early and see that in action daily.
  17. Your tribe can heal you or ail you.
  18. It never stops hurting each time you lose a patent.
  19. There are patients and families you meet that change you forever.
  20. Electronic medical record systems are not always intuitive or user-friendly.
  21. There is a humility that comes from a near miss that grounds you.
  22. Family is everything.
  23. Taking on our patients problems can and does weigh on our souls.
  24. The joy of cracking a difficult case or successfully organizing a family meeting cannot be overstated
  25. Social workers and case managers make miracles happen
  26. Having hobbies and interests outside of medicine keeps you whole.
  27. Never stop speaking up and advocating for equity.
  28. The day you feel you know it all, it’s time to leave medicine.
  29. The power of prayer is real.
  30. The human body is amazing and it’s ability to heal and repair is mind blowing.

As physicians, we are healers, educators, counselors, clinicians, scientists, teachers, leaders, researchers, mentors, team-players, therapists, advocates and more.
I consider myself truly blessed and privileged to be a physician. Looking forward to what the next decade brings..

Yay to the graduating class of 92 from UI and all over the world-so proud of you all!!
