30 years ago this summer, I graduated from medical school.
Celebrating the University of Ibadan College of Medicine class of 1992(UICOM92)!!! My lifelong friends, we did it 🙌🏾💃🏾💃🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Sharing 30 things from 30 yrs in….
- If I could do it all over, I would still go the doctor route. No regrets!
- For me, being a physician is a calling, a life long career and will never just be a job.
- We are incredibly privileged to have people share personal and intimate details with us.
- Empathy, humility and authenticity go a long way.
- Life can and does change in an instant.
- We learn more from our patients than they will ever learn from us.
- Doctor jokes are funny (those who know, know)
- Medicine teaches you life lessons on a daily basis.
- Thank God pagers/beepers are becoming extinct! At some point in the late 90s I was carrying three😳
- Gratitude is a balm for the soul.
- You learn the most about yourself through caring for the most challenging patients.
- It takes a Team to achieve the best outcomes in patient care.
- Making friends with the charge nurses will always be a win-win
- As physicians, we have to and need to take better care of ourselves.
- There will always be a differential diagnosis you didn’t consider.
- Nurses are heroes! You learn that early and see that in action daily.
- Your tribe can heal you or ail you.
- It never stops hurting each time you lose a patent.
- There are patients and families you meet that change you forever.
- Electronic medical record systems are not always intuitive or user-friendly.
- There is a humility that comes from a near miss that grounds you.
- Family is everything.
- Taking on our patients problems can and does weigh on our souls.
- The joy of cracking a difficult case or successfully organizing a family meeting cannot be overstated
- Social workers and case managers make miracles happen
- Having hobbies and interests outside of medicine keeps you whole.
- Never stop speaking up and advocating for equity.
- The day you feel you know it all, it’s time to leave medicine.
- The power of prayer is real.
- The human body is amazing and it’s ability to heal and repair is mind blowing.
As physicians, we are healers, educators, counselors, clinicians, scientists, teachers, leaders, researchers, mentors, team-players, therapists, advocates and more.
I consider myself truly blessed and privileged to be a physician. Looking forward to what the next decade brings..
Yay to the graduating class of 92 from UI and all over the world-so proud of you all!!
